Newcastle United and AC Milan fought against each other for Sven Botman’s signature this summer.

It was the Magpies who managed to win the battle and sign the defender from Lille. The two clubs could be involved in another fight, this time for Marco Asensio.

AS on Tuesday state Newcastle and Milan are the ‘two teams most interested’ in the Real Madrid player.

The winger has less than 12 months left on his contract and has not received a renewal offer from the La Liga winners so far.

Los Blancos were keen on signing Kylian Mbappé, but his decision to extend his contract at Paris Saint-Germain led to suggestions Asensio will stay in Madrid. AS add the ‘truth is that the door for his departure will remain open until the end of the market’, especially with Jorge Mendes as the Spain international’s agent.

Asensio is clear he will not be lacking offers, especially with Newcastle and the Rossoneri keen to land him. Despite this, the report states his salary of €6m net per is an ‘obstacle’, even for the likes of Eddie Howe’s side and Milan.

The two good options for Asensio are to either stay at Real Madrid and then leave as a free agent in 2023 or change clubs in this window to have more game time, so that it improves his chances of representing Spain at the Qatar World Cup.

Carlo Ancelotti’s man will struggle for regular minutes next season if he decides to stay at the club. In the event Asensio agrees to lower his wage demands, it could open the door for him to join Newcastle, Milan or another club this summer.
