Newcastle United youngster Antoñito Cordero has played down any concerns about his failed loan move to Westerlo.
AS cover comments from the 19-year-old today after he was announced by Spanish side Cádiz. He’s joined them on loan until the end of the season after struggling in Belgium.
He only joined Newcastle in the summer on a free transfer. The Magpies even beat Barcelona and Real Madrid to secure his signature.
They immediately loaned him out to Westerlo, hoping that the deal could help Cordero to gain vital experience and establish himself in his first move away from Spain. That did not prove to be the case.
Instead, he managed just eight appearances totalling 102 minutes with the Belgian side during his time there. That led Newcastle to cancel the loan deal and instead send him to Cádiz this month.
They’re delighted to have him, with their sporting director already admitting he’d love the youngster to stay beyond the summer.
It seems that might be an idea Cordero will sign up to. He’s delighted to be back in Spain and refused to look back on the Westerlo experience negatively.
“I wanted to thank everyone for coming and the Cádiz fans for today’s welcome,” he said.
“I feel fortunate to be here. It’s an indescribable feeling to be here at home with my whole family. I’m very happy to be here. I don’t feel any pressure. As my former manager told me, pressure is for tires.
“You have to take something good from every bad experience. It’s been good for my maturity. It’s made me a better and more mature footballer. In terms of my playing style, I consider myself to have a great shot, but I like to let the pitch speak for itself.”
