Roger Fernandes to Newcastle United links started being pushed in Portugal over a week ago, with it being insisted the Magpies are very keen on the youngster.

The interest, and plan to potentially sign the 16-year-old, was said to be part of a wider plan from the Premier League club to secure some of the best young talents around.

Despite his young age, Roger made a handful of appearances for SC Braga last season, and with English clubs often sending scouts to watch the Portuguese side, it was perhaps inevitable the young attacker would receive attention.

O Jogo report that after making initial contact with Braga, Newcastle are now set to make a ‘formal proposal’ to sign Roger. Given his age, the player wouldn’t be allowed to move to the Magpies until he’s 18, but the club want to ‘guarantee’ his future is with them.

A loan back to Braga is a possibility, so Roger can continue his progress with the club. That could be a solution which suits everyone.

Braga have already rejected two offers, one from Ajax for €12m, and one from Borussia Dortmund worth €10m.

Newcastle United would surely therefore have to offer higher than those figures.
