Towards the end of March, Sport stated Newcastle United are closely following Barcelona’s Andreas Christensen. It was also explained a fee of €50m would be enough for them to sign him in the summer.
The Magpies have maintained their desire to sign the centre-back in the summer. That’s at least what Fichajes.net are reporting and they add Eddie Howe’s side are the ‘main interested party’ for the 27-year-old.
Newcastle want to further bolster their defence next season, to compete for the title and the Champions League.
Fabian Schär and Sven Botman are the first-choice centre-backs available at Eddie Howe’s disposal and the duo have already impressed this season. Despite this, they want to sign the Barca defender.
The arrival of the Denmark international at the Tyneside club in the summer would offer Howe a ‘tremendous leap in quality’ when rotating his squad. The former Chelsea man’s experience could also help Newcastle challenge for trophies.
Christensen has enjoyed an impressive debut season since he arrived at the Camp Nou as a free agent last summer, but Barcelona also view him as a player who they can sell to raise funds, which is needed to improve their financial conditions.
Fichajes.net don’t specify whether Christensen is ready to return to the Premier League in the summer, but perhaps the challenge at Newcastle could convince him.
