Newcastle United’s pursuit for Benfica star Darwin Nunez continues to get big attention from the Portuguese media.
Back on Tuesday, it had been newspaper O Jogo who said the Magpies are really keen on signing the striker, and are willing to offer over €50m to land him in January.
Now it’s time for Jornal de Notícias to bring more information on this chase, claiming that both Atletico Madrid and Newcastle are ‘tightening the siege’ for the transfer.
Even though both clubs are still to place official bids, they’re said to be making approaches through agents who are analysing the chances of a January transfer.
In the Magpies’ case, it’s said they’ve already made it known they can offer something close to €50m, while the Colchoneros should only actually move in case they get to sell João Félix.
Benfica are said to have big expectation about the offers, and even though Darwin is protected by a release clause worth €150m, they know there’s the ‘risk’ of receive a tempting bid which could take the player in January. It’s said they only accept negotiating for something over €60m.
The interesting point here is that, according to Jornal de Notícias, Benfica would still raise their demands in case the buyers are from the Premier League, since English sides have a ‘superior negotiating capacity’.
The outlet still claims that there have been more approaches from England and Spain for Darwin, although it’s really Atletico Madrid and Newcastle who seem to be leading this race.
