Newcastle United will have to pay more than their transfer rivals if they wish to sign striker Serhou Guirassy from VfB Stuttgart in January.
That’s according to SportBILD, who explain that Guirassy’s much publicised release clause, which comes into effect in January, differs depending on where the interest parties are from.
They report that Borussia Dortmund are eyeing up a move for Guirassy, who has shone in the Bundesliga this season with 18 goals and two assists in 14 games this season.
That’s seen him linked with a number of clubs, including Newcastle, who have been named as suitors consistently over the last month as they look at additions to bolster Eddie Howe’s injury hit squad.
One report indicated that they would have no problem paying Guirassy’s release clause, but SportBILD explain it may be higher than first thought.
According to their information the value of the clause depends on where the buyers are from and any English teams, they use Manchester City as an example, would have to pay more than Dortmund.
The German side would have to pay around €20m so Newcastle’s figure would be higher than that. It would also be higher than the previously stated figure of €17.5m.
Either way, Newcastle will have to pay more than Dortmund, who may also have the upper hand as they have a good relationship with the player’s agent Moussa Sissoko.
That doesn’t mean a move is a foregone conclusion, though, as the striker is ‘toying with a move to England’ and the serious upgrade in his wages that would offer him.
