When Newcastle United chose to invest €70m in Alexander Isak, it was clear he was the man they wanted to lead their line for years to come.
Injuries may have meant the Sweden international has had a slow start to life at St James’ Park, but now that he’s finally fit, he’s started to find the back of the net quite regularly.
This is why the idea that Newcastle could go after another big name striker in the summer made little sense, and Messaggero Veneto seem to suggest Eddie Howe’s scouts are actually looking at more reasonable names to help back up and provide competition to Isak.
The latest name to appear is that of Beto, currently contracted to Udinese in Serie A, who was a target for Everton during the January window.
In fact, Newcastle also wanted him, and it’s explained the Italians turned their attention to Mateo Retegui to replace him had their star striker been sold.
It’s pointed out Beto ‘had entered the sights’ of both the Toffees and the Magpies, but neither were ‘willing to do a madness’ midway through the season.
While that might have been the case then, there’s no denying Newcastle will be more willing to spend money in the summer, at which point a return to Udine with their chequebook could be on the cards for a striker who has all the attributes to make a name for himself in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old has scored nine goals in 27 league appearances this season after his loan from the last campaign was made permanent for €7m in the summer.
