Back towards the end of April, claims emerged that Jorge Mendes was trying to put Gennaro Gattuso, then in trouble at Milan, on the Newcastle United bench.

With Rafa Benitez’s future still up in the air, there is no guarantee the Spaniard will be in the St James’ Park dugout at the start of the next campaign, which has allegedly led the Magpies to look at potential successors.

Among those was reportedly Gattuso, but those claims were quickly quashed by the former defensive midfielder, intent on qualifying Milan in next season’s Champions League.

Unfortunately for both the Serie A side and the manager, that didn’t happen, and the two parted ways on Tuesday, making the 41-year-old a free agent.

La Repubblica on Wednesday, relayed by Calciomercato, claim Gattuso has already received two phone calls from Sampdoria about taking over next season.

However, that’s not all, as the article states Newcastle made an enquiry about the now ex-Milan manager ‘in recent days.

We’ll now have to wait and see what the former player has in mind for his career: will he stay in Italy where he fell just short of his goals or will he try something new altogether, like the Premier League?
