Friday’s edition of Sport are claiming Newcastle United have contacted Barcelona to ask about Emerson.
The right-back is currently on loan at Betis until the end of next season and for the La Liga winners to keep him permanently because of their co-ownership, they need to pay €6m to the Seville based side.
Barca are willing to take this step only if they receive an offer over €20m for the Brazilian.
Sport states those at Barca believe he isn’t ready to play for them. In addition to this, the 21-year-old is a non-EU player, which makes it ‘almost impossible’ for the Catalan club to include him in their plans for next season.
Based on the aforementioned factors and the defender’s performances for Betis this season, Quique Setién’s side are open to the idea of allowing the South American to leave and are now waiting for a ‘definitive offer’ to arrive for the fullback.
As things stand, Steve Bruce has DeAndre Yedlin and Emil Krafth as the two right-backs available at his disposal at St James’ Park.
The position has been covered and unless and until one of the two decide to leave in the summer, it’s unlikely that Newcastle will bring in another man in the position.
Newcastle’s transfer plan, however, could change if the takeover news goes through and the new owners decide the players already present aren’t good enough.
For now, however, it seems they’ve simply enquired about the situation, and that’s as far as it goes.
