Newcastle United are interested in Benfica defender Antonio Silva, according to reports from Portugal.
The chase is today revealed by newspaper Record, who writes that the Magpies have been ‘closely observing’ the player’s evolution, and have him in a list of ‘potential reinforcements’ for the next summer window.
But the outlet points out that Newcastle may find a couple of difficulties in this chase. The first one is that Silva recently renewed his contract with Benfica, as he’s now protected with a deal running until 2027 and has a release clause worth €100m.
The other issue is that the Magpies are not alone in the race, since the likes of Real Madrid and Napoli are said to be ‘attentive to the player, as they ‘appreciate the qualities’ he has.
Antonio Silva has been standing out as one of the most promising youngsters at Benfica, as at the age of 19, he’s an indisputable starter at the Portuguese side.
That means the Eagles won’t just let him go for peanuts, and Newcastle must put a convincing offer on the table to get him signed, which would have to probably very close to that release clause.
