Newcastle United and Brentford are both keeping a close eye on Lecce defender Tiago Gabriel.

The 21-year-old centre-back has quietly built a strong reputation in Italy this season.

He has completed 88.12% of his passes this season while averaging 1.83 tackles, 1.34 interceptions and 6.86 clearances per 90 minutes.

He has also contributed three goals, which only adds to the appeal for clubs looking for defenders who can impact both boxes. Notably, Lecce’s top scorer this season has only four!

Of course, Tiago Gabriel may not yet be a widely known name outside Serie A circles. However, there is a profile there which makes immediate sense for Premier League recruitment departments.

At 196cm, the former Sporting academy player brings an obvious physical presence. Yet Lecce’s staff also trust him heavily in possession.

And according to Wednesday’s edition of O Jogo, Juventus sent a scout to watch Lecce’s recent match against Pisa. AC Milan are also tracking the Portuguese defender. But Newcastle and Brentford are named among the clubs following the situation from England.

Sporting background and Serie A rise

Tiago Gabriel spent six years in Sporting’s academy before later joining Portuguese side Estrela da Amadora. Then Lecce signed him ahead of the 2024/25 season, and his development in Italy has accelerated quickly since then.

Serie A has often proven a useful testing ground for young defenders because of the tactical demands placed on centre-backs. That context may explain why clubs like Juventus and Milan are now watching closely.

Lecce has just secured their top-flight status for next season and will probably need to cash in on some assets to reinforce their squad. Tiago Gabriel is one of their key performers this season, alongside goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone and midfielder Yiber Ramadani.

Last year, West Ham tried to sign him for €18m and ultimately backed out. Brentford also tried their luck with a €20m offer that was not accepted. When Bournemouth knocked, Italian reports said Lecce “wouldn’t even sit down to negotiate unless a fee of €20-25m is offered”.

So the Italian side is expecting a major fee for an important sale.

Why Newcastle and Brentford are having a look

Newcastle have looked across Portugal, Italy and South America in recent windows, often prioritising physical profiles capable of adapting quickly to Premier League intensity.

Brentford, meanwhile, were already interested earlier this season. The Bees have consistently targeted athletic defenders with strong data profiles. In particular, they like those capable of defending large spaces and contributing in build-up phases.

Tiago Gabriel appears to tick many of those boxes. He is young, tall, aggressive defensively and already has experience in a major European league despite his age.

Both clubs are also expected to revisit defensive options this summer, especially with uncertainty around their squad depth and long-term planning.

The growing competition could become important to this story. There is no indication yet of formal bids from England or Italy yet. However, interest around Tiago Gabriel is clearly becoming harder to ignore.
