Since Tigre star Mateo Retegui was called up by the Italian national team, we’ve been seeing repeat stories about European interest in the player.
It’s been mostly Serie A clubs who’ve been said to be chasing the 23-year-old, who was born and raised in Argentina and has been having a great season there.
It turns out that as local outlet Sitio Andino today writes about this pursuit, they add Newcastle United to that race.
The Magpies are said to be one of eight European clubs who are keen on signing the striker.
Sitio Andino writes that following Newcastle’s change of ownership, they’re ‘in the promise business’, in terms of signing players who have a lot of potential. They point out Alexander Isak is the same age as Retegui, and that’s taken as a sign that both players would have a similar margin of progression.
There isn’t specific information about how far the Magpies have gone in their pursuit so far, despite the report claiming that the European sides have already asked for information about how much it’ll take to sign him.
Newcastle are expected to face competition from AC Milan, AS Roma, Napoli, Lazio, West Ham, Atletico Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt for the signing.
