The Netherlands getting to the semi-finals of Euro 2024 was probably more than many in the country expected before the tournament started.
However, that’s not to say there was content with their performances. There’s been a lot of criticism from Dutch pundits, who are known for not being afraid to stick the boot in.
One of those on the receiving end is Memphis Depay. The attacker is a free agent following the termination of his Atletico Madrid contract and he’s been told Tottenham Hotspur would be the right club for him, rather than somewhere at a higher level such as Liverpool.
Dutch website SoccerNews quote former manager Dick Advocaat as saying: “If Memphis just goes to a good club, and we’re not talking about Liverpool, then he’s just an excellent striker.”
When pressed on the specific club, he answered: “Spurs.”
Not everyone on the panel was convinced, with Johan Derksen saying: “No, he can’t keep up at that pace.”
Indeed Derksen believes Memphis Depay should forget about clubs of the calibre of Liverpool and Tottenham and instead head for the money in Saudi Arabia.
As a free agent and a relatively big name, the 30-year-old should be able to get a very lucrative contract there.
