Manchester United’s potential option to extend Jadon Sancho’s contract this summer is delaying a return to Borussia Dortmund.
BILD report on the 25-year-old today and why a potential return to his former club could fall through this summer.
Transfer discussion ‘in full swing’
The newspaper explains that discussions are ‘in full swing’ within Dortmund’s management. CEO Lars Ricker, sporting director Ole Book and coach Niko Kovač are currently carefully weighing whether signing the attacking star truly makes sporting sense.
The one potential issue that is causing uncertainty is whether Jadon Sancho will be available on a free transfer. That is currently unclear.
While his deal with Manchester United ends in the summer, reports have made it clear that Manchester United may have an option to extend it for a year. That would then allow them to secure a transfer fee this summer.
That means Dortmund can’t make any firm plans. If Sancho suddenly became too expensive, the transfer would quickly be taken off the table. They’re looking for ‘a bargain’ deal.
Manchester United hope
The hope is that Manchester United won’t exercise their option. There are plenty of reasons to believe that they won’t.
Chief among them is that Jadon Sancho currently earns around €16m per year. That’s a huge strain on United’s finances.
There’s also a lack of serious interest following a series of unsuccessful loan spells. Manchester United had hoped he’d make an impression at Chelsea and Aston Villa. Instead, he has one goal and three assists in 34 games at both clubs.
Thus, it would make little sense to keep him this summer. Manchester United would risk not being able to secure the sale that they want.
For now, Dortmund remain in a waiting position. They’ll only move for Sancho if he represents a bargain. If he doesn’t, the club’s management will start to look elsewhere.
