Ajax should not be turning their attention to West Ham United midfielder Edson Álvarez in their search for Jordan Henderson’s replacement.
That’s according to journalist Valentijn Driessen, via Ajax Showtime, who believes it is a mistake for Ajax to go back and look at the West Ham man.
Reports this week have linked the Dutch club with the West Ham midfielder, who does not appear to be in Graham Potter’s plans moving forwards at the London Stadium.
Ajax are hunting for a replacement for Jordan Henderson, and it was explained that they’d be keen to take the Mexican midfielder back, on loan, if it was financially possible. Manager John Heitinga also made it clear they’d love to have him back if it’s doable in a press conference.
Any deal is dependent on Ajax moving on players first and loosening up funds in their transfer budget, having spent this summer reducing costs and getting rid of big earners like Henderson.
Álvarez is well liked at the Dutch giants after spending four years at the club from 2019 to 2023 before his move to West Ham for €38m.
Driessen, though, doesn’t think they should be looking back and isn’t convinced about the player despite his big price tag.
“You shouldn’t want to bring Álvarez back at all. Please, another guy who plays everything out wide like Henderson. Please don’t bring Álvarez. Ajax must move on, not go back,” he said.
“Just because West Ham paid €40m doesn’t mean I think he’s a good player. Not at all. He won’t even make it at West Ham, and that’s not Chelsea, Liverpool, or Arsenal.
“West Ham is a team that sometimes fights relegation, and even there, he’s not the best man. Come on. He might be able to play a bit of football, but I’d rather have a footballer there than another breaker.”
