Manchester United have not enjoyed a good start to the season and are seventh in the table with 10 points after six games, trailing leaders Liverpool by eight points. They were also eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Derby County on Tuesday evening.

According to Marca, the defeat at the hands of Frank Lampard’s side has ‘shed further light’ that the relationship between Jose Mourinho and his employer ‘appears broken’.

The marriage between the Red Devils and their manager has already fallen apart and only the date of separation needs to be confirmed. The report suggests a few in Manchester claim the former Chelsea manager is waiting to be sacked, while the 20-time English champions are waiting for the Portuguese tactician to resign.

His contract at Old Trafford runs down in 2020 and United are hoping Mourinho resigns so that they can save money. The Spanish newspaper talks about how the English outfit are in decline and they look at the various reasons for the situation.

The strained relationship relationship between Mourinho and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is said to be evident and it all started after the latter failed to fulfil the former’s transfer demands.

His comments on Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba, and publicly criticising players off the pitch, coupled with the defensive tactics on the pitch has not helped his situation. Lack of signings and failure from the players to fully back the manager has limited the manager’s own belief in the current group.

The only way Mourinho can improve the situation is by helping United get results and should he fail to do so, the divorce between him and United could be inevitable as Marca mentions Zinedine Zidane’s shadow looms over Old Trafford.

Marca are secretly loving this.
