Newcastle United continue to monitor José Mourinho, but developments in Portugal suggest their window of opportunity may be narrowing.

The Magpies have been repeatedly linked with the Benfica manager in recent weeks. That interest has mostly been described as exploratory.

At the same time, the noise around Mourinho has grown, helped by links with Real Madrid and the usual speculation coming out of England.

Now, though, there is something more concrete happening in Lisbon.

Benfica move to secure Mourinho with formal offer

According to O Jogo, Benfica are set to present Mourinho with a formal contract renewal proposal this week.

President Rui Costa wants to extend Mourinho’s deal beyond 2027 and lock in the long-term project that is already taking shape.

There have already been meetings at the Benfica training centre. Mourinho, Rui Costa and the club’s football structure are aligned and already working on plans for the 2026/27 season. Squad building is a big part of those talks.

This step makes Benfica’s position stronger.

Contract clause could be removed

José Mourinho still has a clause that allows him to leave shortly after the season ends, for around €3m (£2.6m).

That detail has kept things open until now. It is one of the reasons clubs like Newcastle United have stayed attentive and ready in case something develops.

The renewal would change that. Benfica want to remove that clause and make any exit far less straightforward. Mourinho is seen as central to a rebuild aimed at bringing titles back to the club.

What this means for Newcastle United

Newcastle United are still attentive to Mourinho’s situation, alongside Real Madrid, as Portuguese reports keep pointing out.

However, Benfica’s move changes the feel of things. A formal offer on the table, plus plans to remove the exit clause, would make a summer move harder.

For now, Newcastle are watching. The next step depends on Mourinho and how he responds to the proposal.
