Andy van der Meyde spent four years of his playing career at Everton.
The Merseyside club took the 42-year-old from Inter Milan in 2005 and released him when his contract with them expired in 2009. During his time with at Everton, the winger made only 24 appearances in all competitions, managing just two assists in the process.
Although he is one of the major flops at Goodison Park and underwent several problems during his stay with the Toffees, the Dutchman recently admitted he enjoyed his time in England.
Van de Meyde, who has had spells at Ajax, FC Twente, Inter, Everton, PSV Eindhoven and Dutch side WKE, appeared as the guest on the Rookworst Podcast. During the course of the discussion, he detailed how much money he spent during his playing career.
“I think I’ve spent €11m in my career. I bought cars, clothes, jewellery, all that craziness,” Van der Meyde said, as relayed by Voetbalprimeur.
“I was walking around town with a chequebook. I saw a €50,000 Rolex in a jeweller that I wanted. When I was at the dentist I saw a Lamborghini in a magazine, two days later it was in front of my door.”
Van der Meyde then stressed Everton were not happy with the contract they had offered him in 2005.
“I earned €45,000 per week for four years. They still regret that they ever gave me that contract [laughs]. I played 17 games there and cost €90,000 per minute, they calculated. I was the most expensive Premier League player at that time,” he explained.
