Jurrien Timber moving to central defence is ‘more than fair’, given how he’s playing for Arsenal.

That’s according to analyst Hans Kraay Junior, via Voetbal Primeur, who believes Timber is making a huge impression on everyone at Arsenal.

Timber largely plays at right-back for Arsenal and has done since joining from Ajax in 2023. It’s a role he’s excelled in, particularly after returning from a long-term injury last year.

His role for the Netherlands has varied though. Over 20 appearances so far, he’s played at right-back, centre-back and left-back. In the last two games, he’s played centre-back. That was 28 minutes against Lithuania before 90 in the 4-0 win over Malta.

That means a change from what he’s now accustomed to at Arsenal, but Kraay Junior believes it’s more than right.

“I completely understand,” he said.

“He’s making such an impression on everyone and everything (at Arsenal). Not just his teammates and manager, but everyone.

“I think it’s more than fair that he’s being chosen over Jan Paul van Hecke and Stefan de Vrij. He’s in such good form. He often played in that position at Ajax under Erik ten Hag, so it won’t take him any getting used to.”

Arsenal defender: “I play where the manager needs me”

Timber has insisted he isn’t bothered about moving position either. He’s commented in the past on how his versatility is a strength. That’s something that’s not often seen in a similar light back in the Netherlands.

He’s simply happy to be in the team and admits he’ll play wherever his manager needs him to.

“I play where the manager needs me. I think it’s one of my strengths that I can play in multiple positions,” he said in comments relayed by Soccer News.

“I’ve been able to prove myself at center-back, and of course, someone like Virgil (Van Dijk) makes it easier.”
