Schalke currently find themselves 10th in the Bundesliga, which means their likelihood of European football next season isn’t great. It could be worse, Schalke’s losing streak at the beginning of the season had them firmly rooted to the bottom of the table, and the club was in crisis mode.
German newspaper Bild ponder that the lack of European football could nudge Leon Goretzka towards the exit. The player’s contract ends in June 2018, and Bild believe that without Europa League qualification it will be harder to get a renewal.
That then leads to possible suitors, with Arsenal and Juventus named. The German newspaper explain that ‘money and class’ can lure Goretzka to both of those clubs, which is quite complimentary.
Rather than just sneering at the Premier League’s money, Bild recognise Arsenal are a huge pull without that, and in the premier group of European clubs.
Right now there doesn’t seem to be much in this other than Bild pondering and picking out Arsenal and Juventus, but if there’s no contract renewal by the summer then rumours around the 21 year old midfielder will grow.
As well as the money and class, Arsenal have their own little Germany contingent consisting of Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Shkodran Mustafi.
Leon Goretzka has repeatedly been linked with interest from around Europe but there doesn’t appear to be anything concrete yet.
