Tottenham have been interested in Napoli’s Antonio Vergara but attempts are ongoing to keep him in Naples.

In January, the Italian had an impressive spell in the Partenopei first-team. He put in good performances in the Champions League and Serie A, shining during Napoli’s injury crisis.

That is when Tottenham first stepped forward for Vergara. Sport Witness covered their offer closely but Napoli were quick to reject it.

He then picked up an injury and returned towards the end of the campaign, but couldn’t replicate his impact. Despite that, the Italian side haven’t lost trust in the winger.

Meeting set with agent

TuttoSport – via AreaNapoli, report that Tottenham and Bournemouth have expressed interest in Vergara. Atalanta, AS Roma and Como are also in the race.

Napoli are aware of rising interest and club owner Aurelio de Laurentiis has scheduled a meeting with Vergara’s agent. That will take place at 4pm Italian time on Monday and a possible renewal will be discussed between the parties.

The newspaper state another offer of €25m plus bonuses is about to arrive. Napoli are feeling threatened by it but have no intention of parting ways.

Spurs can do better

Vergara’s impact was felt by Napoli last season during a time when they needed someone to step up. But it didn’t last in the longer term due to his injury, which is what Tottenham should be alarmed by.

Before that impressive spell, Vergara had never played in Serie A. That is why there is every chance it was a case of over-performance.

If they like the 23-year-old, they should wait for him to show more consistency across an entire season.
