Aston Villa director of football Monchi has been hailed as the ‘reviver’ of San Fernando, who kick of life anew thanks to him this weekend.
Diario de Cádiz cover the situation today, explaining that the newly formed San Fernando 1940 being a historic season today thanks to Monchi’s efforts in the summer.
Football in the region appeared to be dead after the previous owners decided that would be the case but Monchi, protecting the club his father loved, stepped in to save the day.
The Aston Villa chief couldn’t save the old club but managed to secure their registration, using that to form San Fernando 1940, who will start life in the third tier of Andalusian football.
He ‘fully embraced’ the burden of the club’s resurgence, refusing to see the team his ‘father loved madly’ die and started from scratch. His desire and the fierce fight he put has been backed by a similarly strong reaction from the entire city.
The support has been constant for the Aston Villa man, with a membership campaign seeing 4500 people sign up. Monchi has made the club fashionable in a summer.
Every game is now set to be a celebration with fans, with everything planned carefully. That’s even happening for their return, which will kick off at 19:40 to mark their new name and the year they were founded. Even lines at the club shop, which opened on Friday, were ‘enormous’.
Several players have come out of retirement to help the club, including 47-year-old Pedro Carrión, who was top goal scorer in pre-season.
It’s all down to Monchi, who has surrounded himself with people he trusts such as Sergio Ramos and his brother René. His son, meanwhile, is acting as his ‘hands and feet’ while he does his work at Aston Villa.
Monchi is the ‘reviver’, though, having led the charge which has saved San Fernando and seen them reborn as San Fernando 1940.
