On Monday morning, we covered a report from Spain saying Manchester United are one of the clubs interested in Royal Antwerp youngster Arthur Vermeeren.

It was claimed by Sport that Erik ten Hag ‘really likes him’, and the Red Devils are one of those who could fight for his signing, along with Barcelona.

Royal Antwerp will be playing against Barcelona this week, and as Marca now featurs a story about Vermeeren, they highlight some compliments which should surprise all Manchester United fans who’ve been reading those rumours.

The comments are originally made by Belgian outlet HLN. They claim Barcelona got used to sending scouts to watch the midfielder, and he’s actually ‘a mix of Iniesta, Xavi and Busquets’.

Marca bring details of how Vermeeren was brought up at Royal Antwerp, making it clear he’s the next big thing to come out of the Belgian side.

Now the Spanish media may be talking a lot about Barcelona’s interest in him, but the Belgian press is sure that Manchester United are strong contenders for his signing. Today’s HLN says the Red Devils may have already moved for his transfer in this summer’s window.

“Moreover, sources in the club already indicated in May that they feared they would be late. That an English top club was very close to the file and was considering a multi-million offer (and then keeping him at Antwerp for at least another year). Fingers all pointed in the same direction: Manchester United’s. That transfer would ultimately not happen,” they say.
