Antony can consider his performance for Manchester United against Tottenham as a missed opportunity, with it doubtful if he’ll ever be Premier League quality.
That’s according to Frank de Boer and Ron Vlaar, via FC Update, who have criticised the Brazilian today after Manchester United’s 4-3 defeat to Tottenham in the EFL Cup quarterfinals.
Antony started the game but only lasted 55 minutes before being taken off by Ruben Amorim following a non-descript display.
It was a rare opportunity for the 24-year-old to make an impression on the Portuguese coach, who continues to assess his squad after arriving as Erik ten Hag’s replacement at the end of November.
Antony has so far been outside of his plans, with five appearances totalling 170 minutes to date but mostly coming in the cup competitions, with 11 minutes and 12 minutes against Arsenal and Manchester City as a second half substitute.
He’s failed to make any impact in those appearances, a continuation of his career at Manchester United so far.
Time appears to be running out for him to prove himself to the new management and both De Boer and Vlaar have already made their minds up.
“I have the feeling that I haven’t seen him pass an opponent for a year and a half. I just can’t remember anything,” said the former.
“Antony has often been invisible. In the duels he was simply weak, and he does not come into his strength at all.
If you If you think you have all the time to play football quietly here, then you are wrong. The defense… He will be run over in no time. That is just very mediocre,” added Vlaar.
“When I look at it that way, I don’t think he is a Premier League player. He means, he will not compete. If you can play again and the coach is quite positive about you, then this is really a missed opportunity for him.”
