If Rafa Benitez dreamed that things would get back to normal for him post Everton, it seems that dream is fast becoming a nightmare.
That’s at least according to Faro de Vigo, who cover the Spanish coach today and ‘the third worst start of his career’ with new club Celta Vigo.
Benitez joined the Spanish side in the summer in something of a high-profile appointment, his first since his disastrous spell at Everton.
He had been without a job since leaving the Toffees at the beginning of January last year, waiting for the right opportunity to get back into the game and repair his reputation.
He seemingly thought Celta was the right one but has had a disastrous start to life at the club, as Faro de Vigo cover today.
They explain that ‘the results have not accompanied’ Benitez in his first games as Celta coach, with the four points picked up in the first six games his second worst start as a coach in La Liga since his debut with Valladolid 28 years ago.
He’s coached five La Liga teams and four Premier League teams since then, but no start has been as bad as the one he is currently enduring with Celta.
His start with Extremadura was worse, with just two points from six games, although the two seasons share the similarity of him having lost his first three games at home without scoring a single goal.
For Celta, the current start is one of the two worst starts of their 11 seasons in the top flight, equalling the one started by Eduardo Coudet three seasons ago.
Benitez, then, needs to turn things around quickly or face the prospect of his first job post Everton being as much of a disaster as his time at Goodison Park turned out to be.
