Miron Muslić arrived at Plymouth Argyle in January of this year, signing a three and a half year contract with the then Championship club.
It was the 42-year-old’s first position since being sacked by Cercle Brugge in December 2024. He’d arrived in Belgium following a very short, and winless streak with SV Ried in Austria, a role he resigned from in 2021.
Muslić wanted to build his name in English football, and as that started to happen, Plymouth Argyle worried about the future, especially after relegation to League One was confirmed. The club have since insisted the manager repeatedly told them he’d be staying, and then they faced the shock of Schalke turning up to pay his clause.
There was a lot of drama surrounding Muslić’s exit from Plymouth Argyle, and some of that made it to the German media. Therefore, there’s been some chatter about the manager also having a release clause in his Schalke deal.
Muslić is believed to have an exit clause clause at Schalke worth €5-8m, and he’s been pressed on that. SchalkeTotal quote him as saying: “Frank wrote the clause in for me.”
That’s Frank Baumann, sporting director at Schalke.
Not everyone is convinced, and Muslić had to insist he doesn’t have a career plan set ahead of him, before adding: “I’m here now, and it’s an absolute honour for me to be Schalke’s coach.”
Quoted further by SchalkeTotal, speaking about himself and taking the job on, he said: “My story feels very similar to many stories here in Gelsenkirchen. It wasn’t an easy time, constantly having to fight against adversity, working hard for everything. I think I fit in very well here, also as a person.
“I was really excited about Schalke. When you first come into contact with Schalke, something happens to you. You feel the power, experience the fan culture and enthusiasm.”
