On Monday afternoon we covered a very confident claim from Mundo Deportivo that Mikel Merino to Real Sociedad is happening.

The Spanish newspaper reported Merino has agreed to join the Basque side, despite interest from several other clubs, and would be getting a five year contract.

A transfer fee was estimated at €10-12m and it was stated all parties involved in the move expect everything to be completed.

Tuesday’s edition of Marca backs all that up. The estimated fee is the same, and that’s a figure which has been reported in Spain for some weeks now. It’s claimed Merino aims to sign for Real Sociedad ‘in the next few days’, after giving his ‘final ok’ to the move.

Marca think it’s all so wrapped up that Real Sociedad can move on to trying to secure their other targets in the transfer market.

Whilst the claims are very confident, and it appears Merino does want the move, there’s surprisingly little mention of Newcastle United’s role in all of this.

If it’s just an assumption the Magpies will accept €10-12m, perhaps a figure coming from an agent, then Real Sociedad may be in for a surprise.
