Sporting Club de Portugal midfielder Morten Hjulmand should consider a move to Newcastle United or Aston Villa this summer.

That’s the opinion of his international compatriot Niklas Bendtner, who has commented on the midfielder on the Stolpe Ind podcast, relayed by A Bola.

Hjulmand has been earning rave reviews for his performances in Portugal over the last two seasons after joining the Portuguese side in a €19.5m deal from Lecce in 2023.

He’s been linked with a move to the Premier League consistently over that period, with several sides thought to be keeping an eye on him and his development.

This year could be the one in which he moves, although A Bola report that he the main asset that Sporting want to keep next season and they will stick to his €80m release clause if anyone comes calling.

That hasn’t stopped Bendtner discussing his future and he believes in England, Aston Villa and Newcastle would be ideal destinations for the 25-year-old.

“I didn’t know Hjulmand very well until a few years ago and he impressed me, not only in the national team, but also in Sporting,” he said.

“You want to play in a team that wins. You don’t want to move somewhere where you don’t fight for championships. I feel like he can play in the Premier League or Spanish football. I think he is good enough to adapt to both.

“At Atletico, he would even enter the field hand in hand with Diego Simeone. Similarly fit in Newcastle midfield. They have a crazy dynamic, the three boys. I feel like it could also be an asset at Aston Villa. In these clubs that have already done well, I see him coming in and improving even more.”

Whether Aston Villa or Newcastle would be interested remains to be seen, with both well stocked in midfielder, as Bendtner admits in the Magpies’ case, and that big price tag a major prohibitive.
