Middlesbrough midfielder Marten de Roon believes he can bring something different to the Netherlands national squad. The 25-year-old made his debut for Oranje in their 3-1 victory over Luxembourg at the weekend.

Speaking to Voetbal International De Roon said he realises Danny Blind has plenty of good players to pick from, but thinks his ability as a defensive midfielder could help him remain in the Netherlands set up.

De Roon believes the Netherlands can’t dominate like they have in past years, so with his style of play he hopes he can now be part of the squad going forward.

“Oranje has a lot of good players, but I will stick to my strength and ability to steal a ball. Oranje no longer dominates in the games against the big football countries. So you are asked something else and I think I can offer this. I definitely feel I can stay with Oranje,” said the Middlesbrough star.

De Roon was part of Blind’s pre-selection squad for this international break, but the Middlesbrough star didn’t do enough to impress the Dutch boss. However, Blind recalled the defensive midfielder to his squad following the withdrawals of Jeremain Lens, Stijn Schaars and Vincent Janssen last week.
