Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka has told the Spanish media he’s not thinking about a return to La Liga just yet. The Spaniard was installed as the manager of Middlesbrough in 2013, and guided them back to the Premier League last season.

Speaking to AS, Karanka was asked if he had ambitions to manage in La Liga or at one of the major clubs in the Premier League. The former Real Madrid player said that as a footballer you do have dreams of playing for a top club, but believes it’s different once you become a coach.

Karanka said all he thinks about now is the next game, and getting results: “As a player you dream of going to Athletic, then to Madrid. Now as a coach you dream about winning the next game. I want to enjoy every day.”

Karanka was also asked about his first impressions of Middlesbrough when he arrived three years ago. Karanka said it was a joy giving the supporters happiness given the economic situation in the area.

“Seeing people go home happy in the midst of a generalised depression. They had just closed a steel mill, 2,000 layoffs … To watch the smile of fans down the street when we greeted them,” said Karanka

Middlesbrough have made a steady start since their return to the top flight, and currently sit 15th in the table with 11 points. Karanka’s side pulled off one of the shock results of the weekend when they managed to get a 1-1 against Manchester City at the Etihad.
