Aston Villa’s president of football operations Monchi is the ‘Midas of world football’ as they continue their rise under his leadership.
That’s according to AS, who are busy hailing the Spanish director today as he ‘does it again’ at Aston Villa.
They cover Monchi’s work today, using his recent visit to Seville, where he has reportedly been meeting friends and family and seemingly enjoying some time off, to look at his work at Aston Villa.
They say he has ‘revived’ the club’s great European history, just as he did with Sevilla and during his short stint in Rome.
According to the newspaper Monchi is celebrating after Aston Villa ‘brilliantly’ qualified for the Champions League quarterfinals this week, where they will take on Paris Saint-Germain.
This is ‘greatness’ for Aston Villa after ‘decades of mediocrity and hardship’ and it is Monchi who has ‘resurrected’ them according to AS, who label him the ‘Midas of world football’.
They believe he is simply repeating the trick he’s managed previously, pointing out that Roma previously reached the semi-finals after beating Barcelona when he was in charge there after 30-year without appearing or even coming close to such an achievement.
And then there’s his two stages at Sevilla which were filled with ‘glory and more glory’ as they won the UEFA Cup in 2005 and 2006, the Super Cup in 2005 and then the Europa League in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
He went to Italy after that but returned in 2019 and added two more titles in 2020 and 2023 before he eventually headed to Aston Villa, where he has been leading their revival alongside Unai Emery and Damia Vidagany since.
Whether he can add to his European record there remains to be seen but the signs are good, and history is certainly in his favour.
