Tottenham Hotspur star Micky van de Ven has given his verdict on the club’s new signings as he insists the focus is on never repeating last season.
ESPN have comments from the 25-year-old today from a media round during Tottenham’s pre-season trip to Sydney.
Tottenham signings assessed
The Dutch defender has linked up with Tottenham for their pre-season tour as they prepare for a full season under Roberto de Zerbi.
The Italian successfully led Spurs to safety last season when they looked doomed, and the focus now is on the club never being in that situation again.
They have already undergone a major rebuild, with €267m spent so far on big signings such as Sandro Tonali (€108m), Mateus Fernandes (€99m) and Jan Paul van Hecke (€60m). Marcos Senesi, Andrew Robertson and Martin Dúbravka have all arrived on free transfers too.
Van de Ven is impressed so far, providing his opinion of the new arrivals when asked to do so.
“The new players fit perfectly into the team. They are great players, so we have high expectations for them,” he said.
Tottenham improvement expected
And he wants to make it clear to the newcomers that the intention is to ensure last season – and indeed the year before – are things of the past.
“We are doing everything we can to prevent another season like that,” he added.
“The feeling within the team is really good. A club like Tottenham simply belongs in European football every year. We’re going to do everything to make that happen.”
He is seemingly optimistic for the future under De Zerbi, who he says has added the energy and enthusiasm that they desperately needed.
“The manager isn’t exactly new, of course, since he arrived at the end of the season,” he concluded.
“He brings a lot of passion to the group. That was something we needed, because we were obviously feeling a bit down. But I’m really enjoying working with him.”
