Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki came close to securing a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

That’s according to RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins. He explained to Canal Supporters’ YouTube channel why PSG didn’t sign him from Lyon. Le10 Sport have relayed his comments.

Manchester City reportedly paid €36.5m plus bonuses to complete his signing in June.

Le10 point out PSG were keen on the 22-year-old’s signing in 2024. According to the journalist, the Paris club had a deal in place with their Ligue 1 counterparts and the player.

Hawkins claims the operation was so advanced that a PSG medical was scheduled for the France international. The transfer eventually didn’t go through because of Cherki and the journalist isn’t aware why he backed out.

“Was Cherki really as close to signing with PSG as people were saying? Cherki was supposed to have his medical. I’m telling you. He was supposed to have his medical. It was scheduled,” he said.

“There was an agreement between all parties. I can’t put it any better; he was supposed to have his medical. He decided, for his own reasons, to back out.”

Cherki continued at Lyon last season and excelled for them on the pitch. He scored 12 goals and registered 20 assists from 44 matches and attracted interest from several clubs last summer.

Manchester City acted quickly and wrapped up his signing in June in time for the FIFA Club World Cup.

He has managed three goals and three assists from nine matches for the Citizens this season.
