It’s now been months since Manchester United star Antony was accused of abuse by his ex-girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin.
Even though the subject got a discreet attention in England, the Brazilian media has been giving big coverage to it, getting access to the police reports and the evidence shown by the victim.
Today, there are two reasons why this case is back in the headlines. Firstly, because Antony is presenting himself to the national team, and then because more information came out.
Big outlets such as UOL, Folha and Globo Esporte all had access to screenshots, pictures and audio which are part of the allegations made by Cavallin.
That’s why big journalists are now getting into this subject. Paulo Vinícius Coelho, one of the most reliable in Brazil, shared a column on UOL claiming Antony should be arrested.
His text comes out because many people are asking the national team to leave him out of the squad. He claims that’s not enough, as the Manchester United player must go to trial, and if convicted, to jail as well.
“It’s a criminal offence. Manchester United didn’t take him out of the games. He thinks he’s safe now,” says Coelho.
“For decades, there have been theories about violence in football, linked to the fans, with ludicrous arguments that it would be necessary to create specific legislation for stadiums. Murder has always been murder and has never needed a specific law. Violence, ditto. Against women, it’s in the Penal Code. Antony could receive additional punishments, such as exclusion from the national team squad. Justice must do its part.”
Speaking to Folha, Cavallin claimed that her lawyer is in touch with Manchester United and the Manchester police, as her report in England was made on Friday. It’s said their response was faster than the same authorities in Brazil.
