Last week, the Portuguese media started reporting that Tottenham Hotspur joined the race for Sporting star Pedro Gonçalves.
Several outlets started claiming that Spurs are interested in signing the 24-year-old this summer, after having already taken Pedro Porro from the Lions in the January transfer window.
It turns out that Sporting manager Ruben Amorim was asked by the local media (via Record) about Tottenham’s chase for Pedro Gonçalves, who’s better known in Portugal as Pote.
The manager ended up claiming that Spurs are only signing the player this summer if the release clause is paid, and that won’t be a cheap amount.
“There’s a very good strategy and we have already proved that with Porro’s sale: until they give €80m, Pote will stay here!,” said Ruben Amorim.
“If they do, maybe I’ll even take him there, but until they do, he’ll stay at Sporting.”
A good reason why Sporting are unlikely to negotiate a fee is that 50% of Pote’s rights still belong to his former club Famalicão.
So since the Lions only get half of the money, it’s nearly impossible to see them settling for even less than that.
Tottenham reportedly sent a scout to watch the winger, who has 19 goals and 12 assists this season, in the Europa League clash against Juventus last week, as they had already been impressed with that he’d done against Arsenal.
