There’s a gap in a Catalan sport newspaper… quick, fill it with an Andre Gomes transfer rumour.
That was pretty much the story of the summer, as Barcelona’s most friendly media tried to find an exit route for the Portuguese midfielder, and convince themselves and others there was widespread interest.
Tottenham were the club most often linked, said to be very keen on the player, and to have held some kind of talks, and in that respect the Catalan press were helped by their English colleagues.
However much a Catalan Gomes to Tottenham claim would be based on hope rather than reality, it was swallowed up in England, usually without any kind of questioning. And that’s probably the reason, rather than Spurs being the most interested, that Tottenham claims were most prominent.
Tuesday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo has a Gomes to Juventus story, with the Turin club probably being second only to Tottenham in their links. As part of the claim, which isn’t anything hugely concrete, Mundo bring in Spurs.
Of course they do.
Mauricio Pochettino is said to be the man who wants him and Tottenham ‘would have even spoken with his representative Jorge Mendes’.
The most truth in any of claims is clearly that Barcelona would seriously consider selling Andre Gomes for a reasonable fee over the next couple of windows.
