Manchester United’s Matthijs de Ligt has played just seven minutes in two matches for the Netherlands this year.
Oranje manager Ronald Koeman left the centre-back out of the squad in October before recalling him for November’s matches.
NOS have caught up with the Manchester United player to discuss his return and good form for the Red Devils.
The 26-year-old joined the Premier League side from Bayern Munich in July 2024, after the Euros. He’s played 54 matches so far, and his performances were partly hindered by three different injuries last season.
De Ligt’s form has improved this season and he’s become a reliable defender for Ruben Amorim, playing every minute in the league for Manchester United.
The former Bayern Munich man says he’s feeling positive, both physically and mentally, after changing his mindset.
“I’m 26 now and, I think, I’m entering the best years of my career, both physically and mentally,” he said.
“I’ve changed my mindset. Initially, I didn’t want to make mistakes; now I want to do as many good things as possible.”
Manchester United defender: “I know the club better”

The Dutchman had also picked up injuries during his time at Juventus and Bayern, which impacted his confidence. He explains this when giving the reasons for his Manchester United form.
“There are a few explanations for that. I’ve had quite a few injuries in recent years, which took a toll on my confidence in my body. This year, I was able to participate in the entire preseason. I know the club and the league better, and you feel more confident and can be more dominant,” De Ligt explained.
The Manchester United player has been rewarded with a call up from the national team.
On his return after missing October’s matches, he added: “If you’re not in the squad, it affects you. But the national coach decides. For me, it was important to stay true to myself and keep going. Being selected again is a victory, I think.”
