Besides all the coverage the Italian media has been giving to Sandro Tonali’s betting case, we now get to see some of the attention going to Newcastle United fans as well.
The reason for it is that the midfielder was applauded in the Magpies’ match against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening.
Speaking to Cronache Di Spogliatoio, pundit Riccardo Trevisani brought his view on the Newcastle fans’ attitude, explaining things would have been different in Italy. The quotes are relayed by Milan News.
“The English have a lesser consideration for betting than us Italians, they will miss Tonali and lose an important player, they are perhaps more romantic and only look at the sporting side,” said Trevisani.
“We’ve already talked about it, I don’t necessarily agree with this choice of applauding a player who has bet on football matches, but I understand the English fan who loves Sandro and chooses not to crucify him, also as a matter of culture I think.”
By Wednesday evening, it was already known that Tonali was about to be suspended for around ten months, even though he was fully allowed to play in Newcastle’s match against Borussia Dortmunt. In fact, the Italian media even knew that Eddie Howe would have the midfielder on the bench and possibly use him during the match.
With the player now out of action until the end of the season, we shall see whether the Magpies will make some moves to try to get a replacement for him in the January transfer window.
