In the summer transfer window, Brighton & Hove Albion were linked with a move for Lazio’s Mario Gila.
Corriere dello Sport described the Seagulls as long-term admirers of the defender.
Earlier in October, Il Messaggero claimed that Brighton remain interested in the centre-back, whose contract runs until 2027.
Gila’s situation is closely linked to Lazio’s financial troubles. They were handed a transfer ban in the summer and are in desperate need of sales.
Despite the problems, Maurizio Sarri’s side picked up a 1-0 win over Juventus on Sunday. Gila spoke to the press after the victory and was asked about his future. He also went on to complain about the Roman club’s financial situation.
He said, relayed by Calciomercato IT: “As a team, there wasn’t a positive feeling because we weren’t getting the results. The transfer window didn’t help, but we left it behind.
“Time passes, you can’t give too much importance, the games come and go, and if you stick around with the transfer window as an excuse, everyone else will pass you by.
“The first few games weren’t up to our standards; as I said, everyone’s responsibility was huge.”
“I have to wait for that moment”
Speaking about his contract situation, the 25-year-old said: “I’ve proven who I am as a player, not because the team did the work; I did it and proved it. There are advantages and disadvantages to my contract expiring.”
The Spaniard made it clear that he isn’t too bothered by his situation.
“When the time comes to offer me a contract extension, I’ll think about these factors, so I have to wait for that moment. I’ll think about it. I care a lot about Lazio, but it hasn’t happened yet, so we’ll have to wait a bit.”
It is clear that Gila is happy at Lazio, despite the club’s difficult times.
He has been a key player for the Italian side since his arrival from Real Madrid. In recent weeks, he’s also played in midfield due to an injury crisis.
Gila has played eight times in Serie A this season. Since his arrival from Real Madrid, the defender has made 92 appearances.
