Scott McTominay is yet to play for Napoli since joining the club from Manchester United but his debut for the Partenopei could come against Cagliari at the weekend.

There is a certain amount of buzz in Italy about the signing from United, who moved him on despite his goalscoring run last season. The feeling in Italy is that he could be a key player for Antonio Conte, who intends to challenge for the Serie A this season.

There’s even talk about McTominay becoming a Napoli trigger signing who goes on to hero status, something a certain Marek Hamsik knows all about.

He’s been speaking to Corriere dello Sport about Napoli signing of the Scotsman from Manchester United, and was asked if McTominay’s arrival could be comparable to his.

The former Partenopei skipper said: “He’s an attacking midfielder who, like me, loves to get in and score goals. Let’s see, it depends on the formation.

“But he’s a strong name, he proved it with United and with the national team. A valid replacement for Lobo and Anguissa.”

McTominay has certainly shown the ability to operate in the final third and score goals and was on the scoresheet for Scotland as well during the international break.

Having said that, Conte’s midfield two might not be the best way to use McTominay, who can offer more value in the two behind the striker.

That is an adjustment that the Italian may have to make later in the season if it’s goals he’s looking for from this transfer.
