Dimitri Payet put in a good performance for Marseille on Sunday evening as they beat fierce rivals PSG 1-0 in Paris. Payet spent much of the match being fouled whilst listening to abuse from the limited number of fans allowed in the stadium.

He didn’t back down, always ready to stick up for himself after each kick, but Andre Villas-Boas eventually brought him off after 77 minutes, quite possibly to save him from injury.

Le10Sport now report Marcelo Bielsa has been on the telephone to Payet over the summer. The Leeds United manager picked up the phone to ‘take the temperature’ and see if Payet fancied a return to English football.

According to the report, Payet was seriously tempted, wanting to consider all the options for his future, and reuniting with Bielsa was one he wouldn’t dismiss so easily.

Ultimately, the 33-year-old decided to stay with Marseille, where he’s been given a contract lasting until June 2024. That deal will probably take Payet until the end of his football career.
