Manchester United and Manchester City are again linked to Frenkie de Jong by a Spanish newspaper on Saturday, but this time it’s not a Catalan publication.

Barcelona’s closest media spent some time building up a battle for the Ajax midfielder, to make stories of Blaugrana interest more, well, interesting.

Now they’ve somewhat got bored with De Jong and moved on to his teammate at the Dutch club, Matthijs de Ligt. The defender, unsurprisingly, is also reportedly of interest to Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho.

Anyway, Saturday’s edition of Marca reports that one of the reasons Barcelona aren’t so hot on De Jong any longer, despite still being keen, is that a deal is now ‘a bit more difficult’.

Ajax are starting to rub their hands together at the prospect of an auction situation, given the number of big clubs interested.

That’s when Manchester United and Manchester City get the mention, with the idea of Mourinho and Guardiola going against each other one which would be entertaining in Spain.

Strangely, there’s a chance Barca’s local media have exaggerated De Jong interest and convinced themselves of a battle harder than it’ll actually be.
