Kostas Manolas’ header in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final clash helped AS Roma eliminate Barcelona from this season’s European competition.
According to Marca, the defender’s agent then moved in quickly to offer his client to several clubs across Europe. One of the clubs approached was Real Madrid, according to the Spanish newspaper.
Manolas arrived in Rome from Olympiacos in 2014 and in four years has established himself as one of the key player’s in his side’s defence. His current deal at the Stadio Olimpico runs to 2022.
The Greek international’s agent was aware the 12-time European champions are looking to bring in a new central defender in the summer transfer window. Marca also claim that Manolas’ representative knew that Real Madrid admired the Roma star and thus decided to offer his client to them.
Madrid are of the belief the defenders in Italy play with more protection, when compared to those in Spain. Therefore, there’s a degree of caution in making any approach for defenders currently playing in Serie A.
Roma will be looking to raise funds and Manolas is one of the players who could be allowed to leave in the summer. Real Madrid still have an opportunity to sign the Greek defender and will consider making an approach for him if there are no other alternatives in the market.
