Marco Asensio has endured more than his fair share of criticism as a Real Madrid player. When he was coming through the ranks, some hugely impressive displays saw pretty much the future of the club put on his shoulders.

Understandably, he’s been unable to fully live up to the hype, partly due to struggles with injuries. Yet the talent is there, and the 25-year-old showed that again against Liverpool on Tuesday evening.

Starting the match for Zinedine Zidane’s side, the player was instrumental as Real Madrid beat Jurgen Klopp’s side 3-1. He scored a crucial goal against Liverpool, which was his fourth in four matches for the Spanish club, and shows just what kind of form he’s been in currently.

After the Liverpool match, Asensio was asked about some of the criticism he’s received in recent years, and even in recent months, and wasn’t scared of going after those who he feels have wronged him.

Mundo Deportivo quote the player as saying: “Many things have offended me, but I keep them to myself. I knew that with time I knew how to arrive, I have always trusted in this moment and the most important thing is that it arrives at a key moment.

“What matters is that I have very happy also for me and for this streak of goals. Also for all those who support me in general. I have people by my side who help me a lot, it also goes for them. Above all for the team.”
