Chelsea and Manchester United made attempts to sign AS Roma’s Kostas Manolas, reports Italian website Calciomercato. There were ‘many phone calls’ according to the claims.
However, AS Roma were reluctant to sell Manolas as his former club Olympiacos would’ve got 50% of the transfer fee had he left the club before September 1.
The Serie A club are well aware of the interest from several clubs, and are already negotiating a new contract with the Greek international.
It’s reported a new contract is in the pipeline which will see the 25-year-old earning around €3m-€3.5m per season.
Calciomercato say Manolas will also have a release clause of €40m, and that clubs are already following him from the Premier League.
Serie A giants Juventus also reportedly showed concrete interest in Manolas, and could return for him in the future transfer windows.
Chelsea and Manchester United certainly won’t mind paying €40m for Manolas should they be genuinely interested in signing him.
