Talk around Manchester United‘s interest in AS Roma’s Manu Kone is growing, and there are signs a deal could be feasible for the Red Devils.

Over the past few months, Kone has been a regular in the transfer media. That isn’t just because of his impressive performances but also because of Roma’s need for cash.

In late December, it was stated rather boldly in Italy that the Frenchman would end up at Manchester United this summer. Sport Witness covered that, also noting that Kone would be keen on a switch to Old Trafford.

As the months went by, it became clear Roma needed sales by the end of June to clear their issues with UEFA FFP.

This led to Arsenal making contact for the player and Chelsea were also keen. That sale before June 30th failed to materialise and Roma have negotiated a new settlement agreement with UEFA.

Manchester United given hope

Today’s La Repubblica – via RivistaLaRoma, have some information about the midfielder, who was impressive for France against Morocco. He’s done well across the World Cup, operating both as a number six and a number eight.

The outlet confirm that Manchester United are one of the clubs who are monitoring Kone. His showings at the World Cup have played a role in that, with the Red Devils seeing him as an alternative to Aurelien Tchouameni.

The 25-year-old is also expected to cost much less than his compatriot. La Repubblica state Roma need a €50m offer to start negotiations, hinting the price could go up.

Corriere dello Sport have something similar. They also state Roma’s valuation is €50m and they will listen to offers.

There is clearly something to Manchester United’s interest in Kone. The Italian press have been at it for a while and the player is destined for a big move.

Even if his strengths mainly lie at playing in a number eight role, Kone’s physical traits and ability to beat the press make him a good fit for a deeper role.

That is what Manchester United need, especially as Andrey Santos and Ederson aren’t exactly fit for that number six role. Even though Kone isn’t a pure number six, he is better in that spot than the other two.
