Manchester United are in active negotiations once again for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong and working to find an agreement.
That’s according to Dutch journalist Jack van Gelder, via FC Update, who has backed up reports from England and Spain that Manchester United are back chasing the Dutchman.
Reports throughout this week have indicated Manchester United have turned their attention back to De Jong, who they have continually been linked with over the past two summers.
Indeed, a report today stated Manchester United will spare no effort to get the midfielder, who is an old favourite of Erik ten Hag following their time together at Ajax.
The Dutch boss has continued to re-sign his former players this summer following the deals for Antony and Lisandro Martinez in the past, with Mathijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui recently making moves from Bayern Munich.
De Jong is the one Ten Hag has wanted since his arrival, though, especially with questions remaining about the quality in Manchester United’s midfield.
Efforts over the last two summers have proven to be fruitless but it appears the idea is back on the table, at least if Van Gelder is to be believed.
“There is indeed great interest in Frenkie from Manchester United. Negotiations are ongoing, I understand. In any case, they are working on it,” FC Update report him saying during a roundtable on De Oranjezomer.
The question is how much validity we want to put on the rumours, with them currently feeling like nothing more than easy column inches.
As we’ve already said De Jong to United pops up every summer without much ever happening or the player showing any particular willingness to leave Barcelona and head to Old Trafford.
Thus, we have to take these latest reports with a massive pinch of salt, with a feeling there’s some lazy maths taking place simply because De Ligt and Mazraoui have been signed this summer.
