Manchester United have received encouragement regarding a transfer of Villarreal’s Pape Gueye in the summer window.

The defensive midfielder’s performances have seen him attract Manchester United attention.

He joined the Yellow Submarines on a free transfer in July 2024, after spending four years at Marseille.

Gueye has already played 68 matches for the Spanish club and 32 are from this season, mainly operating as a central midfielder. He’s managed two goals and four assists during this campaign.

His La Liga stats from this season are as follows:

  • Appearances: 23
  • Starts: 19
  • Total minutes: 1,596
  • Minutes per game: 69
  • Interceptions per game: 1.1
  • Tackles per game: 1.3
  • Possession won (final third): 0.5
  • Ball recovered per game: 3.7
  • Clearances per game: 1.7

On February 25th, Sport Witness relayed news from France that Manchester United are showing considerable interest in the transfer.

Foot Mercato covered this report and explained the Red Devils could submit a tempting proposal.

Manchester United transfer would tempt

So Foot have published a detailed interview with Pape Gueye to discuss several topics including the Premier League.

Gueye told So Foot that during his spare time he’s been learning English, however, that isn’t all football related.

On this, he said: “It’s the language of business. I’ve invested in Morocco, Senegal, and Dubai, so that will help me.”

So Foot immediately mentioned the Premier League would be the next logical step for the Senegal international.

When responding to that, Gueye explained: “For now, I’m very happy at Villarreal; I’ve built on my good first season. There were a few offers this winter, but we’ll see after the World Cup. Until then, I can sit down and watch a Wolverhampton-Brighton match and enjoy myself.”

Asked about what he observes, say while watching Wolves face the Seagulls, the 24-year-old responded by saying watching such matches convinces him he’s ready to move to England.

“The midfielders’ play, their impact on the game, the intensity… And watching them, I tell myself I’m more than good enough to play in the Premier League,” he added.

When asked if he has an ambition to win the Ballon d’Or. Gueye said. “Why not? I don’t know if I should say this, but before the Africa Cup of Nations, I was thinking about the African Ballon d’Or. If I hadn’t had that goal, I might not have had such a great tournament or scored that goal in the final.

“Sadio Mané, for example, has always aimed for the stars. That’s how he became the player he is. If you start a season thinking, ‘I’m going to score two goals,’ what’s the point?”

Contract, value and agent info

Pape Gueye has a contract lasting until 2028, and Transfermarkt value him at €40m. Villareal can make a huge profit from his sale as he joined them for free.
