A year ago, not many Manchester United supporters had even heard of Anthony Martial, and they certainly weren’t hoping their club would spend a huge transfer fee on the player.
Louis van Gaal, Edward Woodward and their various advisors at Manchester United made a big decision to invest a great deal in the youngster and they immediately faced crticism, and almost ridicule, for it.
However, Martial had an immediate impact and it was obvious that the young Frenchman had what it took to make his transfer fee seem a relatively good deal.
Van Gaal showed a great deal of faith in Martial and pushed him on to greater things. The attacker has been speaking to French newspaper L’Equipe and explained that Van Gaal wanted the best, even if that sometimes irritated.
“He wanted me to be perfect, as he said it to me. He did a lot for me. Each time, he gave me videos with his deputy, even when I scored in double figures. He showed me the bad things (laughs). Sometimes it’s annoying because you expect him to show you the good things but I knew it was for my own good.”
Martial will hope he has the same prominence under new manager Jose Mourinho, who will surely also not be afraid to point out the bad things.
