Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha is once again part of Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad, and hopes to feature in the upcoming friendlies against Senegal and Tunisia this November.
In a press conference this morning, the forward reflected on his growth since missing out on the 2022 World Cup and said he feels “much more mature” after the setbacks he has faced.
“Every moment in life is an experience that should show you’re growing. Missing the 2022 World Cup was painful, but I’ve learned from it. Today, I deal with frustration and achievement differently. I arrive more mature compared to the Matheus from three years ago,” he told the press.
Cunha has been used in different roles under Ancelotti, starting as a forward for Brazil but playing slightly deeper for Manchester United. That adaptability, he believes, could be key to earning more minutes with the national team.
“Being in the squad is a moment to show your best in every way. Knowing that the coach can use me in several positions is important. In short tournaments, injuries can happen, and it helps to be ready to play anywhere,” he explained.
He also spoke about the pride and sense of responsibility that come with being part of successive call-ups.
“Knowing you’re important and returning to the squad gives you a stronger sense of belonging. It’s about being ready to contribute wherever the manager puts me,” Cunha said.
The Brazil forward admitted to Globo Esporte, however, that even after several convocations, the tension never really goes away.
“Tranquillity? None,” he laughed. “The last time I was waiting for the list, I was walking my dog around the house. It’s every player’s dream to be here, and the competition is huge. So even when you’ve done well before, you still feel that anxiety before each call-up. But I prefer not to look. And if not looking keeps me being called up, I hope it stays that way!”
Brazil face Senegal in London on November 15th, followed by Tunisia in Lille three days later.
